Appeals

How jailed members can appeal their detention, in Discord or on the web.

2 min readAdvanced

While jailed, a member can appeal their detention two ways: a private appeal channel in Discord, or the public web appeal page using the secret code from their jail DM.

Opening an appeal in Discord

The jailed member runs /appeal in any channel. JSD then:

  1. Creates a private channel under the JSD Appeal category
  2. Sends an initial message with the case details
  3. Makes the channel visible only to the member and staff with the jail mod role

Opening an appeal on the web

Every jailed member receives a case ID and a secret code in their jail DM. They can visit the public Appeal a jail case page at /appeal, enter both, and:

  • Review the full case record: reason, category, duration, dates and status
  • See the case timeline (filed, decided, released)
  • Submit an appeal, no login required
  • Come back any time with the same code to check the decision and the staff note

Submitting a web appeal marks the case as appealing and the bot creates a private appeal channel in the server so staff can review it there.

Staff controls

Once an appeal channel is open, staff click one of three buttons — Release, Close (Deny) or Ban — and can optionally add a decision note. That note is shown to the member on the web appeal page, and the member is DM'd with the outcome.

Release

  • Frees the member immediately
  • Restores all snapshot roles
  • Marks the case as overturned
  • Closes the appeal channel

Close (Deny)

  • Keeps the member jailed
  • Closes the appeal channel
  • The case continues until manual release or expiry

Ban

  • Bans the member from the server
  • Closes the appeal channel
  • The case is marked as banned

Appeal workflow

  1. Member opens an appeal (Discord /appeal or the web page)
  2. Private channel opens with case summary, including the member's appeal message
  3. Staff review and discuss
  4. Staff clicks one of the three action buttons and adds a decision note
  5. Channel is closed, the case is updated, and the member is notified in Discord and on the web page

Web dashboard appeals

Open appeals are also listed in the web dashboard. Staff can review every open appeal, including the filed message and where it came from, without being in Discord.

Access via: Server → Appeals

Best practices

  1. Respond promptly: members want their roles back; delays erode trust
  2. Be transparent: explain why the jail happened and what would change the outcome
  3. Use Close (Deny) for unfounded appeals: do not release just because someone asked
  4. Reserve Ban for serious cases: bans are permanent and should be proportionate
  5. Document the decision: every decision note is shown to the member publicly on the appeal page
